In addition to our local field trips to places like Gumbo Limbo Park, Loxahatchee Nat. Wildlife Refuge, and our very own on campus Preserve,  SEEDS will be sponsoring national trips to places like New York State.  See below.

This year’s SEEDS Fall Field Trip will be held September 23rd – 26th (Thursday – Sunday) at the Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) in Newcomb, New York – in the heart of the 6-million acre Adirondack Park. The theme of the field trip is Traditional Ecological Knowledge and biocultural conservation and restoration from indigenous peoples across continents.

The goals of this field trip are to:
(1) Learn about the rich biological and cultural history of the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, and the work of the Adirondack Ecology Center (AEC) that underpins the management of the Adirondack Park as one of the world’s foremost experiments in conservation and sustainability.
(2) Examine role of long term ecological and traditional knowledge in contributing to a long-term environmental record of place, and what this means for conservation and restoration.
(3) Explore the concept of environmental ethics as it relates to conservation and restoration of valued lands.
(4) Participate in a native plant restoration project at AEC.
(5) Listen to the voices of indigenous people in a few locations in North, Central, and South America, on topics surrounding the field tripACEtheme via audio recordings.
(6) Contribute questions around the field trip theme to students who will be discussing biocultural conservation and restoration with indigenous people in Southern Mexico and Belize as part of an August field course (accepted students will be asked to submit questions for these communities in late June).
(7) Collectively and creatively tell the field trip story in a manner that honors all participants and shares the experience with a wider audience.
(8) Prepare field trip participants to think creatively in their own environmental investigations, building their networks to support personally fitting research

bearMentors Stewart Diemont, Robin Kimmerer, Becky Begay (a SEEDS alumni!) of the State University of New York, Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and Neil Patterson of the Tuscarora Environment Office will lead the group in discussions and workshops on Traditional Ecological Knowledge as it relates to creative restoration and environmental engineering, migration, and long-term adaptation to environmental change.

The Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) is the leader in ecological sciences in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York and a major contributor to the science internationally. Established in 1971 by the State University of New York College of Environmental Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, the AEC attracts scientists from throughout the world, providing a base of operation for research that seeks to understand the natural ecosystems of the northern forest. Together with top educators, AEC helps the people of New York preserve and enhance the quality of a wilderness environment while at the same time fostering a vibrant economy. The AEC is located on ESF’s Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF), a 15,000 acre field station in the central Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

Cost: ALL EXPENSES FOR THIS FIELD TRIP ARE PAID BY SEEDS with the exception of expenses students incur while traveling to New Your from their home airport (mileage or public transportation costs to home airport, airport parking, in-route meals).
Eligibility: Undergraduate students are eligible to apply who fully support the mission of SEEDS to promote diversity in ecology, with a graduation date no earlier than December 2010.

Chile International Research Experience for Students (IRES)

Chile FlagThe Sub-Antarctic Research Alliance (www.chile.unt.eduwww.osara.org) is an international and interdisciplinary program, coordinated by the University of North Texas (USA) and the Universidad de Magllanes in association with the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (Chile). Its activities focus on the integration of ecological sciences and environmental philosophy, under the rubric of biocultural conservation, in the subantarctic ecoregion of southern South America. For three years beginning in 2009, ESA SEEDS will collaborate with this program in an NSF funded grant titled International Research Experience for Students that will send up to eight students per year to southern Chile’s Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve, where they will work under the guidance of foreign mentors and in teams with Chilean and Argentine students. Two of the eight students will come from the SEEDS Program.

Christopher and Deborah This is the first time SEEDS has participated in an international activity, and according to Dr. Christopher Anderson, Director of the Sub-Antarctic Research Alliance, “this collaboration is already turning out to be a huge opportunity for our two programs; we have come together to promote an innovative and unique experience for diverse students from across the US to not only do research abroad, but also integrate into a meaningful biocultural conservation program with colleagues from various disciplines and countries.”  We could not agree more within SEEDS. We are thrilled to see an example of interdisciplinary, international conservation in the name of both biology and culture successfully at work. SEEDS has been talking about these ideas for a long time now and our network of folks involved in biocultural conservation has just grown dramatically, not to mention across borders.  This is an excellent partnership.
